Jody - The Portland Highland Games is just days away! Join us for two days full of Scottish fun on July 18 & 19. See the program of events.    Pipers and drummers, fiddlers, dancers and athletes will be competing for top prizes. There will be clan tents where you can explore your Scottish heritage, vendors offering Scottish wares, food and drink, and Celtic bands performing throughout the day. Gates open at 12:00 on Friday for an afternoon of family fun activities, heavy athletics and Celtic rock. The Games continues early on Saturday at 8:00 in the morning. See the program of events.    Back by popular demand - Whisky Tasting Experience! We welcome back the Northwest's premier experts on whisky, Dr. Mick Secor of the The Highland Stillhouse Pub and Stuart Ramsay of Ramsay's Dram. Expand your knowledge and appreciation of Single Malt Scotch Whisky and learn what contributes to its diversity as you taste examples from several regions.   Also join us for harpers circle, sheepdog demonstrations, fiddling competitions, and new this year, Ceilidh dance social. And send the wee lads and lassies over to the Young Highlanders area!   Admission to the Games is a great value for two jam-packed days of authentic Scottish culture and entertainment. You still have time to buy advance admission tickets online. Kids 5 years and under get in free! This year's Forest Music Concert Series begans this Saturday with Da Boogie Band!   Da Boogie Band Saturday, July 19 6:00 - 7:00pm   The concerts are open to the entire family with a suggested donation of $10 to cover the cost of the bands.  Sasquatch will be selling beer and wine and you will find some light food available. This concert will take place in the Jackson Shelter so the public can enjoy the view of the park while listening to Da Boogie Band performing New Orleans style swing. Da Boogie Band consists of eight members playing trumpet, saxophone, guitar, drums, piano, bass, plus vocals. "We love to motivate people to clap to the music, and get them out of their seats to dance," said Ron Hayes, vocalist with Da Boogie Band.     RSVP for our VIP Member's Reception before the Concert begins.   Saturday, July 19 5:00 -6:00pm   Members are invited to enjoy the forest and the Friends, receive a complimentary beverage donated by Sasquatch Brewing Company and reserve a seat for the show! Each concert will begin with a VIP Member's Reception. July 16th and 23rd will be the annual Lake Oswego All Comer Track Meets held at Lake Oswego High School. A fun summer tradition.

Registration begins at 5:30 with first events starting at 6:00. All ages 2 - 102 years old welcome. Modified events for the youngest participants. $3 per person -- unlimited events. Ribbons for the kids.

Come join us at our Garden Party on the third Saturday of July to celebrate Mary Charlotte and the many pioneer women who trekked across the Oregon Trail and made Oregon civilized. Enjoy live music, tour the historic farm on the Oregon Trail, and learn about 19th century fashions. Tour our historic Rose Ramble, with starts of pioneer roses available for your garden. View the needlework of pioneer women, and learn about their crafts from modern practitioners. Kids and grandkids will enjoy the hands-on activities, like corn-grinding, croquet, crosscut sawing, and building a log cabin.

History:
Mary Charlotte was Philip Foster's long-suffering wife, and mother of nine (four when she made the trip around the horn in 1842). Philip Foster, one of Oregon’s earliest pioneers, was a leader in the establishment of Oregon. His farm and home in Eagle Creek played an important part in the history of the Barlow Road, which followed the south side of Mt. Hood as an alternative to the treacherous Columbia River route. Either option held great danger: navigate the river’s swift currents and rapids, or risk the steep slopes and early winter snows in the mountains. Foster helped fund, build and operate the Barlow Road at various times between 1848 and 1865, guiding thousands of covered wagons into the Willamette Valley.

I love the Phillip Foster Farm.  It's an amazing place in a beautiful setting, run by dedicated volunteers. They wish for you to know about simpler times, when people worked hard and appreciated all that they had.  Worth the trip and fun activities for the kids.
