Shop Now | | DIGITAL COLLECTIONS Columbia Rediviva Collection The Columbia Rediviva was a merchant ship that has the distinction of being the first American ship to circumnavigate the globe under the command of Captain Robert Gray. Captain Gray and his crew became the first known European vassal to navigate the bar at the mouth of the Columbia River in May 1792, and the river was later named for the ship. This collection (MSS 957) includes correspondence, journals, ship logs, administrative records, and ink sketches relating to the Columbia Rediviva, detailing everything from day-to-day life on the ship to an inventory of the ship's cargo to interesting wildlife sightings and weather conditions. One of the standout pieces is this dramatic ink wash painting of the ship in squall signed by George Davidson, the illustrator on Robert Gray's second voyage. Browse the Collection

By Rachel Randles On a nearly daily basis, tourists and locals stand on the OHS plaza, gazing up at the historic Sovereign Hotel while considering the vast, painted façade that looms above them. The trompe l'oeil murals, created by artist Richard Haas, depicts thirty-foot-high likenesses of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, the Oregon Trail, and the Astor fur trade. While the scale in itself is enough to stop you in your tracks, the clever "trick of the eye" technique used to paint the mural leads many to ask — "is that painting really flat?" In this post, learn about how Haas created this striking piece of public art and how critical building repairs led to its repainting in 2016.
| | By Erin Brasell Thanks to the internet and the popularity of urban scavenger hunts, OHS staff recently rediscovered a piece of our institutional history: the Kohler Hygeia, a 1960s-era women's urinal. Yes, a women's urinal. While the existence of public restrooms is not the most inspiring topic, by nature of their function, they are areas where exclusion, integration, and ideas about privacy are all practiced (and sometimes challenged). So, what happens when these very public yet private spaces become a museum attraction? They provide an opportunity to chuckle, blush, and expand the collections! OHS Technical Services Librarian Katie Mayer and OHS Web Strategist Jay Cosnett redesigned the new catalog to both be easier on the eyes, and make researching OHS's library collections more straightforward. Although the new homepage is the most obvious change to the catalog, it's not the first and it won't be the last.
