The Giving Tree - Take One and Make a Special Christmas

Most shopping centers and lots of other stores, libraries, schools and churches have a giving tree set out each holiday season.  The trees usually contain the name of a child and one of their top Christmas wishes.

This weekend I was at the Clackamas Town Center and came across their tree.  The tree was FULL.  I guess not many had noticed it yet.  The tags on the tree included names like Jesse, Jamal, Matt, and Abby.  These kids weren't looking for much.  One boy wanted a wallet, another an umbrella, and another a pair of gloves.  It was heartbreaking.

I was surrounded by kids telling their parents they wanted a shopping spree at Nordstrom's and Aeropostle and Wet Seal and Abercrombie, and hearing, "Can't we just go to Paris for Christmas again?"

I wanted to take all of the tags off the tree.  But, I left some for you!  Better yet, go to your local giving tree with your children and let them choose the child and maybe even buy the gift with money they earn from you, by doing extra chores.  It's a fantastic way to teach charity and a great time to encourage your kids to be grateful for what they have.

Christmas Tea at Old McDonald's Farm

Old McDonald's Farm is a non-profit, owned by my friend Stephanie and her family.  The farm does tours, summer events, holiday events, science and all kinds of fun with for kids and families with animals and plants!

Their mission:  “In facilitating healthy social and emotional development, OMF is committed to providing at-risk protective factors to children through structured, educational experiences using animals, agriculture, gardens and natural resources as educational tools.” We are not necessarily teaching children to be farmers, but rather using a farm to teach wholesome, healthy life lessons.

They are holding a fund raising tea next Saturday and Sunday.  A fun holiday activity for you and your girlfriends that also helps a good cause.

Winter Wonderland Lights Half Price Deal

Last year I visited this light display for the first time in many years.  It has really expanded and is a great way to see lots of Christmas lights and animated displays.  Usually we opt for driving around neighborhoods and walking through Peacock Lane and the Wenzel Farm.  $8 is half of the regular price and well worth it for a carload of people.

Don Ehlen's Insect Safari!

This is truly a once in a lifetime experience to see a world class insect collection. Don will be taking us through an astonishing array of species and knowledge about these amazing creatures.

This is a free event and open to all ages. Complimentary beverages (beer or wine and something non-alcoholic) will be served for the last three hours of the event.

Here is a little about Don...

Don has been interested in and studying insects since the age of five. He spent his childhood in Minnesota collecting specimens and reading every book about bugs that he could find. He took up serious collecting as a young adult while attending the University of Minnesota in 1981. After relocating to New Mexico in 1982 his collection grew dramatically. Don studied entomology at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and traveled around the Southwest searching for new and interesting specimens. Don moved to Washington State in 1989 and soon after began voluntarily showing his collection to school children. Don started Insect Safari in 1994 responding to the encouragement of teachers that such a program was much needed to support insect study in elementary curriculum.

Nearly FREE Photo Book deals

These sites are almost always offering good deals on printing photo books.  The holidays is a great time to take advantage of these special offers.  What a great gift for Grandma to get a hard bound book of the grandkids!

York Photo offers a free 5x7 softcover book, plus shipping.

Grovebook is an interesting site that allows you to upload 100 photos each month and pay only $2.99 for a photobook.  The first one is free. The book comes perforated so that you can easily pull the photos out for framing or scrapbooking.  It's a good way to get photos off of your computer and phone.

Shutterfly is offering an 8" x 8" hardcover photo book for only the price of shipping, until Dec. 4.  I have gotten in on this deal in the past.  The book is pretty nice, but you need to make sure and use high resolution photos.

Walgreen's has a free 8" x 10"  collage print available until Nov. 4.

Fwd: Christmas for Kids ***Calling all Shoppers***

I am forwarding this information from Christmas for Kids.  It is an organization that brings Christmas to a needy family.  I have volunteered to shop with a child for the past several years and it is an amazing experience.  This is adults only volunteering, but it is fun and worth the time.  Read the email, look at their website, and consider helping in any way you can.

Join Christmas for Kids this year on December 4th, 2013 @ Fred Meyer, Hollywood location @ 30th & Broadway for a day that can only be described as unforgettable.

Those of you that have previously volunteered and witnessed the impact your time had in a kid's, or an entire family's, life know what we mean.  Don't hesitate... click here and reserve you, or your teams, time to shop with a kid or be an all-day elf.

Those of you that are hearing about this for the first time or just don't quite know what Christmas for Kids is and why it's so special, please take a moment and click here to read the Christmas for Kids story or read some stories from those personally touched by clicking here.  If you would like to jump in as a first time volunteer this year, make your reservations here.

By combining donations time, merchandise and cash Christmas for Kids is able to make every $1 donated result in $2.82 in Christmas shopping for an underprivileged kid. Your donation of any kind makes an exponential impact on those that need it the most.

Thank you everyone for continuing to keep the Christmas magic alive.

Halloween Movies for the Family

Even though this is a holiday of the scary, it's not that difficult to find fun and laughter at Halloween.  Here are some movies that everyone in your family can enjoy.  There might still be some sort of scary scenes in a few of these.  It is Halloween afterall.

  • Nightmare Before Christmas
  • Corpse Bride
  • Frankenweenie
  • Hocus Pocus
  • Halloween Town
  • Scooby Doo on Zombie Island
    • Any Scooby Doo cartoons
  • Harry Potter
    • Any of the movies from the 7 book franchise.
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events
  • Laurel and Hardy Meet Frankenstein, or the Mummy.
  • Hotel Transylvania
  • Monsters Inc.
  • Monster House
  • ParaNorman
  • The Ghost and Mr. Chicken
    • Gotta love Don Knotts
  • The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
    • Animated Disney version of course.
  • Disney's Monster Mash
  • It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown
A few for older kids.  Some of these have stronger language and scare factor.
  • ET
  • The Simpsons Tree House of Terror episodes.
  • Monster Squad
  • Gremlins or Gremlins 2
  • Ghostbusters
  • Ghosts on the Loose
  • Vintage 50's Monster Movies
    • These aren't so scary by today's standards.
    • I Was a Teenage Werewolf
    • Creature From the Black Lagoon
    • LOTS of others.
  • Twilight Zone episodes
  • Young Frankenstein
If your children get scared this time of year, talk to them before watching any of these films.  A little reassuring from a trusted adult BEFORE they get scared is a lot more helpful then after!  If in doubt, watch the movie yourself first.

Happy Halloween!
