Enjoying Library Story Time & Teaching Respect at the SAME TIME

I follow a number of family friendly blogs, and once in a while I come across something I really want to share with you.  I list a fair amount of library activities on this site.  Usually they are free, they are fun for kids and adults, and it gets you out to the library!

I found this great article from What We Do All Day that has some fantastic  DOS AND DON’TS OF STORY TIME (TIPS FROM A VOLUNTEER).

As you know, you are the first, and always most, influential teacher for your child.  They are always looking to you to see how to act and what to do.  If you model great, respectful behavior at the library, so will they! (Eventually ;-) )

A Mom with a Lesson Plan recently posted a great blog about how to read to active kids.

There are some great tips there to get your wild ones interested and listening to the books you are trying to mark on their summer reading logs.

Summer Reading Programs!!

Summer Reading Theme is "Dream Big, READ!"

Clackamas County Summer Reading

Multnomah County Summer Reading

Washington County Summer Reading

Summer Reading programs are a great way to keep your kids busy and encourage the love of reading.  Plus, get some great prizes along the way!
Basically, go to your local library and sign up.  Each county does things a little differently, but most will give you a reading journal or game board to keep track of your kids reading.  Some give prize everytime you come into the library, others give prizes when the card is filled to a certain point.  Prizes vary from t-shirts, Oaks Park coupons, Rides at the Fair, and more.
Reading journals can be filled by reading, being read to, or  listening to books on cd.

Oh please don't go.......we love you so!

The amazing author and illustrator, Maurice Sendak has died at the age of 83.   He inspired so many to read and let themselves fall into a book, let the fantasy wash over them, and forget the world for a while.  He didn't write realistic fiction.  His stories were often pure, wonderful, wonderful, nonsense.   He is most famous for "Where the Wild Things Are" but he has so many other fantastic head scratchers.  Books that make you suspend disbelief and imagine.

Be off with you, run to the library and check out, "In The Night Kitchen", "Over the Water", "Little Bear", "Chicken Soup with Rice", "One Was Johnny", "Hector Protector", Alligators All Around", "Outside Over There", "Higglety Pigglety Pop", "Pierre" and MORE MORE MORE!

Get the video "Really Rosie and the Nutshell Kids" to see several of these stories animated, with words sung by Carole King.

"There are so many beautiful things in the world which I will have to leave when I die, but I’m ready, I’m ready, I’m ready.”

“I cry a lot because I miss people. They die and I can't stop them. They leave me and I love them more.”

Free Comic Book Day - May 5, 2012

FCBD LogoEvery year the first weekend in May is Free Comic Book Day.  Comic book stores all around the country have a selection of special comics for FREE just for the asking.

As a teacher, I am always interested in ways to get kids reading.  Comic books have increased reading fluency for millions of boys and girls over the years.

When you stop at one of the local shops, ask if you can take an extra book to donate to your child's classroom!

September 2011 Hat In the Hat

You Can Meet the Cat in the Hat
at the Clackamas Town Center Barnes & Noble store.
I love Dr. Seuss!  What a great author and story teller. Who knew you could be so entertained on just
a few nonsense words repeated over and over?
Dr. Seuss has these great books that everyone loves to pieces, like "How the Grinch Stole Christmas", "Green Eggs and Ham", and "The Cat in the Hat".  But he has lots of other fun books to choose from, books with great messages such as "The Sneetches".  "The Sneetches" teaches kids to look beyond differences and accept everyone.  "Oh The Places You'll Go" teaches kids to dream big, and "The Lorax" teaches about the environment.
You could go to the bookstore and buy all of these books, but this website is about FREE and Cheap options, right!  So go to the Thrift shop, or better yet, stop by your local library, check out a bunch of Dr. Seuss and pick your favorites to purchase later when you can find them at a steal.
In the mean time, go to the Barnes & Noble at the Clackamas Town Center on October 14 to meet The Cat in The Hat.  I've met him, he's a great guy, even though he seems like a major jerk in the movie!

Check the   PortlandFamilyFun.com - Calendar of Events      for more details.
