A sweet afternoon in Downtown Milwaukie

I admit, I took these pictures earlier in the summer, however, you can have just as nice a day in Downtown Milwaukie on any Saturday afternoon.  Well, minus the parade and fireworks, of course.  But if you want to enjoy those, don't miss Milwaukie Daze next year.

Downtown Milwaukie is located just off of 99E.  It's just a few small blocks that look like a rural 50's small town.  Park along Main Street and you can walk up and down to see all of the cute shops and restaurants.

Kids running for Candy at the Milwaukie Daze parade.
I am happy to be a part of bringing back Milwaukie Daze in 2009 after it was abandoned for a few years and potentially forever.  I joined the comittee to bring it back and although I am not a part of it now, I am so proud to see the parade and festivities.  Volunteering really does make you feel like you are a part of your community.  Look here for PortlandFamilyFun.com - Volunteer Opportunities opportunities in your community.

Milwaukie Candy Store, Enchante'.
The Milwaukie Candy store is beautiful inside.  The owner Kim is so sweet and friendly, and the chocolate is tasty!  My favorite is the white chocolate covered popcorn.  Yum!  Located on Main Street.

Crafty paper store!

K.Marie's Crafty little shop is so fun, if that's your kind of thing.  And she is so fun and chatty.  My mom, sister and I had a ball chatting with her for about an hour our sunny Saturday adventure.  She has classes and workshops to make great decorative projects.  Just a few doors down from her sister Kim's chocolate shop.

Libby's Restaurant

I never went into Libby's before this summer.  They used to have blacked out windows, and that always scares me away from any restaurant.  But once they uncovered the windows, you can see that it's pretty cute inside.  The wall are covered in antique Miliwaukie photos, and the food is pretty tasty, but a little spendy.

Milwaukie has a lot of fun to offer anyone.  Every Sunday they have a Farmer's Market.  There's Bowling at Kellog Bowl or Milwaukie Bowl. There is shopping at Things From Another World comic book and collectibles shop, Main Street Collector's Mall and Soda Fountain, and various other specialty shops.

The food!  My favorite downtown Milwaukie Restaurant is Ohana.  They serve authentic Hawaiian faire in the North Main Village area.  I would love to live upstairs and smell the Hawaiian BBQ all day long!

And fun for the kids too!  Pietro's Pizza and Game Gallery, and Wunderland Nickle Arcade and Movie Theater, with 3D movies for $4!

Day Out In The Sun

I went out and about today.  So did everyone else, it seems!

What a busy Saturday around town.  Such a beautiful day!

We made a few fun stops today.

Pine State Biscuits  is a tasty breakfast and lunch spot on Belmont, with another location on Alberta.  The Belmont store is small, only 4 tables and 4 stools. We took our food to go, because there wasn't any place to sit. It's very busy on a nice Saturday morning, but the long wait is worth it.   I wouldn't recommend bringing the kids if they can't wait long.  The food is fantastic.  I was with a group of 5 and we all loved our food.   It's southern style, with AMAZING biscuits as the base of most breakfast and lunch dishes.

2204 NE Alberta(503) 477-6605 Open 7 days a week, 7am - 2pm
Fri/Sat late night 6pm - 1am!!

Unique Flea
A little Flea Market on 6th and Belmont.  It's just one street of outdoor vendors.  It's mostly vintage collectibles.  Some nice items and tasty donuts.  They run every third Saturday through October.  Some good deals, but mostly Antique Shop prices.

Webfooters Post Card Club
We stopped by the Web Footers Post Card Club sale at the Kliever Armory.  Post Card collecting is a fun little hobby.  It's great for kids because it is inexpensive, small, and easy to display.  When you go on little trips, let the kids pick up a couple of post cards.  They can also practice their writing by thinking of their favorite part of the activity and writing it on the back of the cards.

I don't like buffet restaurants!

I wish!
As a kid, we didn't eat out much.  When we did eat out, it was always at a buffet.  Maybe because kids ate cheaper when they used to charge by the year.  I was still 9, when I was 12.  We, the kids, hated the buffet and still do.

You know I am a sucker for a good deal.  This week we got a $6.99 dinner coupon at Hometown Buffet, with the promise of juicy steak.  It's easily been 10 years since I have been in any buffet for any reason, and so we went.

Guess what?  I don't like buffet restaurants!  So much of the food gets wasted, and not because there is so much to eat, but because so much of it doesn't taste good.

The potatoes are bland, the chicken tastes funny, the green beans are over hammy, the steak is tough, the clam chowder is greasy and even dessert was oily and bland.

The rolls were good, the staff is super friendly and the pop tasted like usual, but other than that it's not worth it.  Even at $6.99.
