Summer Food Free Lunches & Applying for School Free Lunch Assistance at Home

We all know this has been the most unusual summer!  And with so much unemployment or underemployment, finding money for food can be tough.  In Oregon, anyone under the age of 18 qualifies for free lunch 5 days a week, with no registration or proof of income.  Visit www.SummerFoodOregon.org for details on how to find locations for pick up.

This year school districts will still be providing FREE lunches for kids, even though they may not be meeting in person for class.  Many districts have increased the income limits for students who can receive FREE lunch.  Please check your school district page for more information on that.  Many districts are still employing their bus drivers by having them drive their routes and passing out lunches a couple of days per week.  (Enough food for 5 days.)

Hundreds of star lovers from across the Pacific Northwest will be meeting at both Rooster Rock State Park and Stub Stewart State Park at 8 p.m. to watch and enjoy the wonder of the Perseid Meteor Shower. The event, sponsored by OMSI, the Rose City Astronomers, the Vancouver Sidewalk Astronomers and Oregon Parks and Recreations will have telescopes set up for attendees to use. OMSI staff will be presenting informal talks about the meteor shower, constellations, and the summer sky. On the scheduled day of each OMSI Star Party, it is suggested that interested visitors call the OMSI Star Parties Hotline, (503) 797-4610 #3 then #5, or check the OMSI Star Parties web site http://www.omsi.edu/starparties for possible weather-related cancellations.

Summer Reading Programs!!

Summer Reading Theme is "Dream Big, READ!"

Clackamas County Summer Reading

Multnomah County Summer Reading

Washington County Summer Reading

Summer Reading programs are a great way to keep your kids busy and encourage the love of reading.  Plus, get some great prizes along the way!
Basically, go to your local library and sign up.  Each county does things a little differently, but most will give you a reading journal or game board to keep track of your kids reading.  Some give prize everytime you come into the library, others give prizes when the card is filled to a certain point.  Prizes vary from t-shirts, Oaks Park coupons, Rides at the Fair, and more.
Reading journals can be filled by reading, being read to, or  listening to books on cd.

Salem-Kiezer Volcanoes Minor League Baseball Opener June 14!

For those die hard baseball fans who miss the Beavers and can't quite forgive the Timbers.  You can let them off the hook!  We have a baseball team within 40 minutes of town. The  Salem-Keizer Volcanoes  stadium is right off of the I-5 freeway with plenty of free and close in parking, and the tickets are reasonable.  It once took this long to circle downtown looking for a good spot, or as much as you will pay in gas to pay for a good parking spot.  The seats are closer and it's just as fun!  They have lots of upcoming promotions and fun events planned.

Let's go out to the 'Ol Ball Game!

Memorial Day Weekend, Gateway to Summer!

Okay, okay!  I know it's not technically summer for a while yet, and today's rain showers sure didn't make it feel like we are right edge of the good ol' summertime, but we really are!  I have a LOT of work to do this weekend to start updating the calendar and summer page.  Until that is done, remember not to miss all of the Rose Festival events listed in the last post and on the PortlandFamilyFun.com - Calendar of Events, and the Multnomah County Fair this weekend at Oaks Park.  It looks like they have a lot of interesting exhibits and events this year to try and lure you away from the City Fair downtown.  Free admission as well!  They are having Pig Races, Wiener Dog Races, Petting Zoos, Exotic Animal Photo Opportunities, typical fair fare, and of course rides and roller skating at the Oaks.
